Connie Meeks Carter is a retired educator and children’s author from Brunswick, Georgia. Her stories draw on family memories, a lifelong love of learning, and Christian faith to offer children and families encouragement and hope.
Connie grew up in Brunswick with two younger sisters. Her parents, the Reverend Grover C. Meeks and Rita Odom Meeks, were originally from Lyons, Georgia, where visits with her grandparents became a treasured part of childhood. Her early years centered on church, school, Girl Scouts, and family. Her mother was a homemaker who made all of the girls’ clothes. Connie especially enjoyed Scout camping trips and studying math and science.
When Connie was twelve, her father became a minister while continuing to work as a welder. His hard work, perseverance, and humility left a lasting impression. Through her parents’ example and their church life, Connie learned about God and how to rely on Him.
After high school, Connie married Leon “Lucky” Causey in 1971. He loved boating and hunting, and together they welcomed their daughter, Angel, in 1975 and their son, Greg, in 1977. On December 7, 1978, Leon died while attempting to rescue a co-worker. He received the Carnegie Hero Award posthumously.
Connie later remarried, and her third child, Drew, was born in 1980. Her children loved visiting their grandparents, attending church, and participating in Scouts. Connie served as a Scout leader for her sons, sharing the enjoyment of outdoor activities she had known as a girl. She considers her children her greatest blessings.
When Drew started kindergarten, Connie began college to prepare for a career that would allow her to support herself and her children. That decision led to more than thirty years of service in education. She earned degrees from Brunswick College, Armstrong State College, and Georgia Southern University, followed by an Educational Specialist degree in Technology in Education from Lesley University. She also earned certifications in elementary and gifted education.
In 1995, Connie married John Carter, Jr., her encourager, and welcomed two stepsons, John III and Jeff, into her family. As the family grew, she became “Nonnie” to five beloved grandchildren: Eric, Jimmy, Mason, Lexi, and Logan.
As a teacher, Connie delighted in helping children discover the natural world. For many years, she took students on three-day, two-night trips to the Jekyll Island 4-H Center, where they explored coastal habitats and learned through firsthand experiences. Trips to Rock Eagle 4-H Center gave students opportunities to compare inland environments with their coastal Georgia surroundings.
Connie retired from C. B. Greer Elementary in 2018 and continued serving Glynn County Schools as an EIP teacher and Instructional Lead through early 2026. Today, she brings her experience as a mother, grandmother, and educator to her writing.
Her beautifully illustrated picture book, The Swing, tells the true story of Angel and the swing her father lovingly built for her—a gift that became a cherished reminder of his love after his death. Through this book and the stories she continues to write, Connie hopes to help children find comfort in treasured memories and discover hope through family and faith.
