Asquino<\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/strong><\/h3><h5>author<\/h5><p class=\"organic-profile-bio\"><strong>Mark L. Asquino<\/strong> is a retired Foreign Service officer. His three-decades-plus career included assignments in Latin America, Europe, Central Asia, and Africa. During 2012\u20132015, he served as the U.S. ambassador to the Republic of Equatorial Guinea, Spain\u2019s only former colony in sub-Saharan Africa.<br>\u00a0<br>Prior to entering the Foreign Service, Mark was the Fulbright lecturer in American Studies at the University of Oviedo in Asturias, Spain (1975\u201376). He earned a PhD in American Studies from Brown University, where he also received his undergraduate degree. Mark and his wife, Jane, live in Santa Fe, New Mexico, where he is the president of Global Santa Fe.
