Facing together the dangers of war leads to a bond resulting in a lifelong friendship that overcomes all obstacles and inspires their foray into the entrepreneurial pursuits of buffalo and horse ranching.

While fighting his own emotional scars of war and personal loss, Johnny discovers the joy of horseback riding and the healing benefits of a working relationship with horses. This discovery motivates him to develop a horse companionship program offered at no cost to fellow service members to help them, like himself, conquer the emotional effects of battle they brought home from war. This program was later extended to include at-risk teenagers.
